## The Challenge of Network Redundancy

Network availability has always been a critical concern for both businesses and technology-forward homes. When you have multiple broadband connections—DSL and cable in my case—the question becomes: how do you create seamless failover without expensive enterprise equipment?

Rather than purchasing a single router with built-in failover capabilities, I explored a more flexible approach using Sveasoft's Talisman wireless mesh firmware. This solution transforms standard wireless routers into intelligent mesh nodes capable of creating self-healing network topologies.

## Mesh Network Architecture

A wireless mesh network provides multiple communication paths between nodes and the uplink connection. When one router fails, the network automatically reroutes traffic through alternative paths, maintaining connectivity without manual intervention.

My implementation consisted of:

- Router 1: Connected to DSL downstairs
- Router 2: Connected to cable modem upstairs
- Mesh firmware enabling automatic failover between uplinks
- Transparent traffic routing across both connections

## Performance Characteristics

The system delivered on its core promise of high availability, but with measurable latency during failover events:

- **Link detection:** 1-2 minutes to identify uplink failure
- **DNS propagation:** Additional 1-2 minutes for name resolution
- **Total recovery time:** 2-4 minutes (average 2-3 minutes)

While enterprise-grade single-box solutions achieve failover in seconds, they lack the distributed coverage benefits that mesh topology provides.

## Strategic Benefits Beyond Redundancy

This approach delivered unexpected advantages:

- **Expanded coverage:** Multiple access points eliminated dead zones
- **Load distribution:** Traffic could be balanced across connections
- **Scalability:** Additional nodes could extend the mesh as needed
- **Cost efficiency:** Repurposed existing hardware rather than replacing it

## Why This Still Matters

While modern SD-WAN solutions have largely superseded custom mesh implementations, the fundamental principles remain relevant. Today's distributed workforce requires resilient connectivity, and understanding mesh networking concepts helps technology leaders evaluate enterprise solutions.

The experiment demonstrated that creative network architecture could solve availability challenges without significant capital investment—a principle that applies whether you're building home labs or designing enterprise infrastructure.
